Diffusion and Osmosis
Science Experiement Diffusion Osmosis.jpg

My Hypothesis
If Diffusion and Osmosis relate to the disintegration of the eggs shell, then the eggs shells will disintegrate and it will either expand or dis expand depending on the solution it is in, Because the hypo tonic solutions like saltwater make the water enter the egg and hyper tonic solutions like corn syrup make the water leave the egg making it expand and dis expand.

Materials
Corn syrup, Table salt,
4 eggs, Beakers ( figures 2&3 ),
Water, Scales, Saltwater, Vinegar,
a spoon, and tape.

Procedure
First we placed the eggs in a beaker and filled it with vinegar, and left it for 3 days. Next we weighed the eggs larger thy were, by now the vinegar had taken all of the shell off them ( figure 1). Then we put water, saltwater, and corn syrup in three separate beakers ( figure 2 ). We placed an egg in each solution and waited 1 day ( figure 2 ). Then we weighed them again and then put them in opposite solutions.

Observations
The eggs removed from the vinegar have no shell. They have a mass of 96 grams. They appear to be larger than a regular egg which has a mass of 65 grams. they feel soft and squishy. They also feel a little bit less fragile then a regular egg. The first eggs masses were; Mass 1: 89 grams, Mass 2: 39 grams, Mass 3: 86 grams. The second eggs masses were; Mass 1: 90 grams, Mass 2: 94 grams, Mass 3: 94 grams. The third eggs masses were; Mass 1: 97 grams, Mass 2: 98 grams, Mass 3: 74 grams. When cut open membrane feels like rubber balloon.( figure 1)

Conclusion
In conclusion I now know that diffusion and osmosis is possible. Its possible because when we did the experiment water would enter the the egg and leave the egg depending on the solution in rapid time. Water enters and leaves the egg because of the different amounts of concentration in the solutions. The first egg went from 89 grams to 39 grams and then to 86 grams in four days that is amazingly fast.

Relevance
Osmosis and Diffusion keep us alive because it lets water and nutrients enter our cells. If it did not get to our cells, our cells would not be able to keep producing the things our body needs to survive and we would die. That is why we need Osmosis and Diffusion.

Tips
If you can't get your egg to sink down in the corn syrup then try pushing it down with a spoon and taping the spoon to the side of the beaker. If you want the experiment to be even more fun try adding some food coloring, It's part of diffusion. We had some problems and ideas like this and they worked and were fun.
